But why should we spend tax money on things that benefit people who pay tax money?

Those computers look like the future.

From what I can see as an outside observer, it’s more a problem of “Why pay taxes at all? It’s pure theft!!!!!!! Communism.... something... something...”

I fail to understand how paying a few cents more that will result in the individual not losing a day’s pay for visiting the DMV seems like a bad idea.

Wow, she looks really good there. I usually envision the past being so different in style. The hair is the only obvious sign (aside from the computers).

The blast from the past here is pretty awesome. This was also back when computers were treated with great respect and programmers were rare specialists.

I just think the bigger mystery is why people don’t really care too much about where that money goes. When tax money goes to something stupid, everybody complains. But when something that’s good or necessary doesn’t get enough money, people don’t wonder why.

People do care where the money’s spent. If there wasn’t so much waste, people would be way more willing to pay necessary taxes. But time and time again, tax money is spent on things other than what it should have been, so people get sick of it. A recent example is the increase in PA transportation taxes, gas, registration, inspection fees, etc. That increase was supposed to pay for infrastructure. It should be more surprising than it is, but a few days ago the AP reported that 80% of that funding is not going towards transportation, but instead is funding the state police. Another less recent example that I remember is when PA legalized gambling. The revenues from that was supposed to eliminate property taxes. God only knows where it went, but it didn’t end up where it was supposed to. A much less recent example but still relevant is the Johnstown flood of 1936. A tax on liquor was passed under the guise of aid for Johnstown after it was severely damaged in a flood. The money collected the first year went to Johnstown, but every year after it went to not Johnstown, continuing to this day. It should be easy to see why attitude is “why should I pay additional taxes when they’ll be misspent, and the original problem won’t even be fixed”.

I never brought up the subject of additional taxes. Just that tax money should be spent on things that directly benefit the society that pays the money.

there was an article a couple years ago in my state that the dmv fees were increasing at half the rate of inflation. increasing the fees was voted down, but every year they need to take from other parts of the state budget.

I was just giving examples of where taxes were raised, then they went to something completely different. It’s been stewing for a while and you presented an opportunity.
